Inverie is the village of the Knoydart peninsula, a row of whitewashed cottages along the shore of Loch Nevis beneath steep green mountains.

No road reaches it. You come by boat, a seven-mile crossing from Mallaig, or on foot, a hike of eighteen miles over the hills.

Much of the peninsula is run by its own people through the Knoydart Foundation, a community organisation that looks after the land, makes its own renewable power, and runs a bunkhouse, camping, a shop and a ranger service. The Old Forge, the village pub, is community owned too.

There is plenty to fill a day or a longer stay: guided walks with the rangers, bikes to hire, a tea room on the water and a beach looking out to Rum.
