Kinloch Lodge became a hotel in 1972, when the High Chief of Clan Donald and his wife opened their own home to guests.

Godfrey Macdonald, the 8th Lord Macdonald and 35th High Chief of the clan, and his wife Claire had a simple plan: comfortable beds, endless hot water, a warm welcome and very good food. The family ran it for more than five decades. In 2026 the keys passed to the Wickman family, who have been Skye hoteliers for more than thirty years.

Inside The Dunvegan.

The Dunvegan is a fire restaurant with six en-suite rooms in Dunvegan, on the Isle of Skye, set in three acres on the shore of Loch Dunvegan. Blair Hunter and her husband Tim, who have lived on Skye since 2007, took over the old Dunvegan Hotel in 2019, and Tim and their son Ruairidh cook over flames, smoke and embers, in a style that comes from Blair’s family’s Argentine roots.

Inside Bothan Beileag.

Bothan Beileag is one of two shepherd huts on Janet Ward’s croft at Heasta, four miles from Broadford on the Isle of Skye, and it is the more easily reached of the pair: parking is right beside it, and its private bathroom is closer, at the Big Shed. Inside there is a double bed with pure linen bedding, a wood-burning stove and extra instant heating, with power and charging points. In winter Janet offers this hut first, because it is more sheltered.

The annexe bedroom has a free-standing bath under a skylight

Tigh an Tobair is a house for eight in Colbost, on Skye's Duirinish peninsula, with floor-to-ceiling windows looking over Loch Dunvegan. Out on the deck, the wood-fired Scandinavian hot tub is fresh water with no added chemicals, empty when you arrive and ready for you to fill. The Three Chimneys restaurant is close by.
