Skeabost House Hotel
With 21 bedrooms and a restaurant.
Skeabost House is a historic Skye mansion on the shoreline of Loch Snizort at Skeabost Bridge, beside the River Snizort, which the owners call the main salmon river on the island.
Visited and photographed by Hidden Scotland
The hotel owns the fishing rights for the river’s whole length: it has 12 beats, and the first two include sea pools within the grounds. It is one of the four hotels of the Sonas Collection.
The bedrooms are in the house and in the grounds, and the owner, Anne, and her family created them as a nod to Skye. They include Deluxe, Garden, Seaview, Standard and Cosy rooms, a two-bedroom Family Suite with bunk beds, and the Gate Lodge, a restored lodge a five to ten minute riverside walk from the hotel. Dinner is in the West Pier Restaurant, with its garden and loch views, or more intimately in the Billiard Room, and afternoon tea is served by the fire in the lounge or in the conservatory. The small bar has a fireplace, local gins and a whisky flights menu.
The West Pier Restaurant serves breakfast, light bites and dinner, with an al fresco sea-view terrace, and dinners are also served in the Billiard Room.
Check-in is from 3pm and check-out any time before 11am.
Dinner is served from 6pm to 8.45pm, and the hotel strongly advises booking before arrival; afternoon tea is £24.95 a person, served from 2pm to 4pm and booked 24 hours ahead. Parking is free. The five 7.5kW charging points, four at the hotel and one at the Gate Lodge, cost £7.50 for an hour or £30 overnight. Rates are for two adults sharing. A few rooms have a sofa bed for one child aged 3 to 15, there is a two-bedroom Family Suite with bunk beds, and cots are available for under-twos, with extra charges for children and cots. The hotel’s FAQ says no dogs are currently permitted at Skeabost. There is no air conditioning, but electric fans are available on request, and smoking and vaping are not allowed in bedrooms or indoor public areas. Payment is due seven days before arrival, and cancellations inside seven days are non-refundable. Fishing permits for the Snizort are booked through the hotel, and there is no fishing on a Sunday.
Skeabost House is at Skeabost Bridge, Isle of Skye IV51 9NR, on the A850, the Dunvegan road.
From the Skye Bridge, follow the A87 to Portree, take the Uig road out of the town, turn left at the sign for Dunvegan and continue for two miles on the A850; the hotel drive is on the right after the first road sign. From the Uig ferry terminal it is 12 miles on the A87 and then two miles on the A850. The Armadale ferry is a 65-minute drive away, Inverness Airport is two hours 55 minutes by car, and Glasgow and Edinburgh airports are about five hours. The river is the main thing here. The Snizort has 12 beats: the first two, with sea pools, are in the hotel grounds, the middle stretch known as the flats (beats 3 to 7) is a short drive away and holds some of the best pools, and the upper beats (8 to 12) have gorge pools and streamy glides. The salmon and sea trout season runs from 11 February to 15 October, with the first salmon usually arriving around the end of June and the peak from August to the close. Day permits in 2025 were £60 in February to June, £80 in July and August and £100 in September and October, and the hotel has no ghillie but can recommend one. The Gate Lodge is a five to ten minute riverside walk from the hotel, and Portree is the nearest town for exploring.
