In Portree, behind a timber shopfront with a Misty Isle poster in the window, Isle of Skye Distillers sells the gins two local brothers make nearby.

The shelves hold the whole range in its green and clear bottles, alongside whiskies, wines, beers and rums from other small Highland producers, and there is usually something open to taste.

The distilling happens in a small still house on the edge of town, where little copper pot stills with curved swan necks sit on workbenches and labelled jars of botanicals hang in crates on the wall. The flagship is a classic juniper-led gin shaped by the Storr and the Cuillin, with sweeter and fruitier gins, a festive spiced gin, vodka and liqueurs alongside. It is a good stop in town for a bottle to take home, and a taste of what a small island distillery can do.

Skye's first gin distillery.

Thomas and Alistair Wilson, brothers raised on Skye, gave up their day jobs in 2016 to build the island's first gin distillery. Misty Isle Gin went on sale in February 2017.

A paratrooper and a barman.

Thomas served in the Parachute Regiment and was a firefighter and a builder; Alistair ran bars and restaurants in Glasgow. Between them they built the distillery from the ground up.

Before the first gin, the brothers spent months experimenting and foraging for local juniper berries, often in the rain.

The Fruity & Floral gin uses pears, blackcurrants, meadowsweet and raspberries grown in the distillery garden, and raspberries soaked in the gin before bottling turn it pink.

The still sits behind the family home on the edge of Portree, and the distillery is being extended, with new stills, to begin making whisky in late 2026.
