The Three Chimneys is a restaurant with rooms at Colbost, on the shore of Loch Dunvegan in the far north-west of Skye. The whitewashed cottage was once the village shop, and in the 1960s Joy MacAskill turned it into a tea room and gave it its name. Shirley and Eddie Spears bought the business in 1985, and over their 35 years it collected more than 30 major awards. Since 2019 it has belonged to The Wee Hotel Company, and the cooking still starts with local produce, served simply.
Next door, the House Over-By has six suites looking over Loch Dunvegan towards the Outer Hebrides: five split-level, and one on a single level for families, with an accessible bathroom. Staying guests have a table kept for them at dinner and breakfast included, and the lounge has big windows over the loch and a fire to read by.
Each suite has a smart TV, a Bose speaker, tea and coffee with fresh milk and mineral water, a minibar and an iron and ironing board, with free high-speed Wi-Fi through the House Over-By and direct-dial telephones.
Check-in is from 3pm and check-out by 11am, and breakfast is included in every rate.
Guests staying in the House Over-By are automatically given a table in the restaurant for dinner. Dogs are welcome in some of the suites, up to two to a room, at £50 for the first night and £10 for each further night; ask before you book, as there are few suites for dogs, they cannot be left alone in the room, and only registered assistance dogs are accepted in the restaurant. Children are welcome and there is a cot and a Z-bed, with no extra charge for children sharing with their parents; under-eights can’t eat in the restaurant at dinner, but with notice the House Over-By can give them tea at 5pm. One suite is on a single level with a ramp and an accessible bathroom; the other five are split-level, divided by three small steps. The restaurant closes from mid-December to mid-January, and Winter Break rates of £275 for bed and breakfast run on selected dates to 31 March 2027.
Colbost is a crofting township, part of Glendale, on the shore of Loch Dunvegan in the north-west of Skye, near the foot of MacLeod’s Tables, the flat-topped hills of the Duirinish peninsula.
The restaurant and House Over-By stand on the B884, a single-track road between Dunvegan, five miles away, and Glendale, three miles away. The nearest railway station is Kyle of Lochalsh, 51 miles away, and public transport is very limited and the owners ask guests without a car to ask them for advice. There is a helipad outside the restaurant. The shore of Loch Dunvegan is right outside, and from the lounge windows you may see wildlife on the loch. Dunvegan Castle is five miles away at Dunvegan; the owners also point guests to Coral Beach, Neist Point and its lighthouse, and the Duirinish peninsula. The Three Chimneys has a second restaurant at the Talisker Distillery, where lunch follows a whisky tour. The reception team can print local walks and maps and dry wet-weather gear and boots overnight.
