Waystone Books is a small independent bookshop in a whitewashed cottage with a blue door on the Kilmuir Road in Dunvegan, next door to the Giant MacAskill museum.
A waystone is a marker set in the landscape by human hands to guide travellers, or a lodestone pointing the way home. The shop means to be a place to slow down, read, meet and talk, and to get out of the cold.
Inside, under a sloping ceiling, wooden shelves run round the walls above a long table of new books, with a window seat to sit and read in. It specialises in modern fiction, independent publishers and local authors, and in beautiful things; it is openly queer, and proud of it. There is coffee, and the shop hosts clubs, workshops, talks and community events. It is open from 8am to 6pm, Wednesday to Monday, and closed on Tuesdays. Dunvegan Castle is a short way up the road.
