Neist Point – Sunset and Dinner at the Three Chimneys
A few hours.
The route
Neist Point is the far western tip of Skye, a long ridge of cliffs with a white lighthouse at its end, and on a winter afternoon the sun goes down over the open sea beyond it.
Watch it from the cliff top, then drive back through Glendale for dinner at the Three Chimneys, the famous restaurant in an old cottage on the shore of Loch Dunvegan.

The day
Neist Point
A late afternoon on the cliff top as the light goes, then a warm dining room by Loch Dunvegan and a long, slow dinner.
About four and a half hours

Neist Point
An attraction
Park in the free council car park at the very end of the single-track road beyond Waterstein. Leave the steps down to the lighthouse for a daylight visit, and take the short path north-west from the car park onto the cliff top instead. It's boggy underfoot but has no steps, and from the top the great cliff of the headland and the white lighthouse lie below you, with the Minch beyond. Get there about half an hour before sunset, which comes at about 4.15pm in mid-November, 3.45pm in December and 5.50pm by the end of February. Out at the tip, the lighthouse flashes white every five seconds. The cliffs are high and unfenced, so stay well back from the edge, keep hold of children and keep dogs on a lead, as sheep graze the headland. Head back to the car about half an hour after sunset, while there's still light in the sky, with a torch in your pocket.

The Three Chimneys
Dinner
It's 14 minutes' drive back through Glendale to the Three Chimneys, which was Colbost's shop in years gone by. Dinner is a tasting menu built on what Skye's boats, crofts and gardens bring in, from £130 a head. Children over eight are welcome at dinner, and only assistance dogs are allowed in. The dining room is on the ground floor, with an accessible toilet, a few steps from its car park.
If it rains
The sunset needs a clear sky and a calm evening. On a wet or wild one, go straight to dinner instead.
