The Three Chimneys at Colbost began life as the village shop.

The whitewashed cottage on the shore of Loch Dunvegan served the people of Colbost as their shop. In the 1960s it passed to Peter MacAskill, and it became a tea room. Then in 1985 Shirley and Eddie Spear bought it and turned it into a restaurant, and people have been driving out to the far north-west of Skye to eat there ever since.

Inside Raasay House Hotel.

Raasay House is the grand old house of the island, a five-minute walk from the ferry and now owned by the community. Today it is a relaxed, dog-friendly hotel, with a library of leather chesterfields, a café and a bar. Its outdoor centre will take you kayaking, sailing, archery or out on a boat trip. It's the place on Raasay to eat, drink and find out what's on, and the old walled garden and St Moluag's Chapel are just behind it.

A short walk from Skeabost House, a tiny island in the River Snizort was once the cathedral of the Isles.

Eilean Chaluim Chille, St Columba's Isle, holds the grassy ruins of one of the largest churches in the Hebrides. From about 1387 it was the seat of the bishops of Sodor, the medieval diocese of the Isles. It faded when no great family chose to be buried there, and today it is a quiet graveyard among the trees, reached by a footbridge from the road.
