Places to Stay on Skye in Winter

Skye in winter is a different island, with quiet roads, low golden light on the Cuillin and the chance of the northern lights on a clear night. These are the places to stay that keep their doors open right through the dark months.

Curated and written by Hidden Scotland

Updated 23 September 2026. Across the Isle of Skye.

Come to Skye between November and March and you'll have much of it to yourself. The coach tours have gone home, the car parks at the famous viewpoints are empty, and the light, when it comes, is low and golden. Snow dusts the tops of the Cuillin, the stags come down off the hills, and on a clear, dark night there's always a chance of the northern lights over the sea.

Plenty of places close for the season, so we've gathered the ones that stay open all winter. There are cosy cottages with a stove to come back to, country house hotels with fires in the lounge and dinner in the dining room, and a few snug little hideaways for two. Every one of them is somewhere you'll be glad to see at the end of a short, bright winter's day.
