St. Columba's Isle
Introduction
Hidden away near the southwestern corner of the peninsula is an unassuming river island with a remarkable past. St Columba’s Island – reachable by a wooden walkway – is the final resting place of no less than 28 clan chiefs, and spent four centuries as the site of the cathedral church of the Bishop of the Isles.
Location
St. Columba's Isle is situated just outside Portree, on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. To reach this historic site, drive south from Portree on the A87, then turn onto the A851 at Skeabost. Follow signs for Skeabost and the site will be on your left, marked by a small signpost for St. Columba's Isle. This area is known for its serene environment and the ruins of ancient churches, as well as graves of the local chiefs from the MacNicols and MacLeods clans. It's a peaceful place for walking and reflection, rich with Scottish history.
