Introduction

Escape to the enchanting Fairy Glen on the Isle of Skye, a captivating natural wonder where legend and the raw beauty of the Scottish landscape intertwine. This otherworldly glen, with its unusual rock formations, cone-shaped hills, and vibrant greenery, offers a truly unique experience. Formed over millennia by post-glacial landslides, the Fairy Glen's distinctive features are a result of Torridonian sandstone being sculpted by the forces of nature. Years of erosion further shaped the landscape, creating cone-shaped craggy hillocks, scattered boulders, and tranquil lochans. One of the most notable formations is Castle Ewan, a natural basalt outcrop resembling a crumbling medieval fortress.

Fairies were believed to live deep within the heather of Fairy Glen, located on the Trotternish Peninsula. The glen's geological origins are linked to volcanic activity that occurred in northern Skye around sixty million years ago, with thick lava flows contributing to this unique landscape. The Fairy Glen teems with life. Freely roaming sheep graze the landscape, adding to its charm. Bird songs fill the air, creating a symphony of nature. Lush green grass and patches of moss carpet the ground, while heather adds splashes of purple and pink during its blooming season.

Getting there: Located just south of Uig, the Fairy Glen is easily accessible by car. Take the A87 road towards Uig and turn right onto the small single-track road signposted to Sheader and Balnaknock. Follow this road until you see the Fairy Glen car park.

When to visit: To avoid crowds, consider visiting early in the morning or in the evening, especially during peak season. Autumn offers a great time to visit with fewer people around.

Where to stay: There are a number of hotels and campsites near the Fairy Glen. The Uig Hotel is a short drive away.

Things to do:

  • Explore the landscape: Wander through the glen, taking in the unique rock formations, tranquil lochans, and lush greenery.
  • Climb Castle Ewan: For those who don't mind heights, climb to the top of Castle Ewan for stunning views of the surrounding area.
  • Spot wildlife: Keep an eye out for the freely roaming sheep and various bird species that call the Fairy Glen home.
  • Enjoy a picnic: Find a scenic spot to enjoy a meal amidst the natural beauty.

Please note: While the Fairy Glen inspires a sense of wonder, it's important to be mindful of our impact. Please refrain from creating stone formations, as this practice disrupts the natural environment, causes erosion, and harms sheep grazing. The stone circles and stacks you may have seen on social media have been removed as they were not a part of the natural landscape and were contributing to soil erosion. By being mindful and respectful visitors, we can ensure that the magic of the Fairy Glen endures for generations to come.
