Despite golf being one of the national sports of Scotland, it is in Fife that the moniker wears its crown. The region is home to some of the best internationally regarded links in the world – including those found in the beautiful university town of St Andrews, where the British Open is frequently played.

From playing Glastonbury to running a cider festival

Grant Hutchison, former drummer of Scottish band Frightened Rabbit, has swapped global festival stages for life in Fife running a cider shop and launching a new festival. After stepping back from touring following the death of his brother and bandmate Scott in 2018, Hutchison moved to Anstruther with his wife and opened Aeble in 2021. Now a father of two, he is preparing to host The Ubhal Cider Gathering in Leith this March. He hopes the event will champion small producers and challenge perceptions of cider, while keeping his brother’s musical legacy alive for his children.

'Rare sighting' of walrus on rocks off Fife coast

A walrus was spotted resting on rocks off the coast of Elie in Fife in what has been described as a rare sighting. The animal was reported to British Divers Marine Life Rescue, which monitored it while keeping the location quiet to prevent disturbance. Volunteers said the walrus appeared healthy and left the area the following morning. Walruses are occasional visitors to UK shores, often travelling long distances from the Arctic. Conservation groups stress the importance of minimising disturbance, as the animals may be exhausted and require undisturbed rest before continuing their journey.

Scottish First as Club Launches Season Tickets for Dogs

Cowdenbeath FC has become the first football club in Scotland to introduce season tickets for dogs. The Lowland League side now allows supporters to buy canine passes for £15, giving dogs entry to all home fixtures alongside their owners. The initiative follows the club’s recent “Bring Your Dog to the Game Day” success and aims to make matches more inclusive for pet owners. Cowdenbeath FC, who were relegated from League Two in 2022, said the scheme has already attracted positive attention from fans and animal charities.

World's most expensive fish, bluefin tuna, spotted in Firth of Clyde

A bluefin tuna, among the world’s most expensive fish, has been spotted in the Firth of Clyde. The large fish was seen by marine observers this week, prompting excitement among wildlife and fishing communities. Bluefin tuna are rare in these waters, and their appearance is taken as a positive signal of changing sea conditions. Experts say sightings like this may indicate improving health of marine ecosystems. No capture has been reported. The tuna’s presence has also drawn interest from conservationists, who hope such visits may lead to more study and monitoring of giant predatory fish around Scotland.

Look Up: The Red Arrows Fly Over Scotland Today

Scotland’s skies will roar with colour this evening as the Red Arrows perform a display over Aberdeen and begin their homeward route south. After dazzling crowds at the Tall Ships Races, the RAF’s world-famous aerobatic team will fly near Kintore, Insch, Rhynie, and Peterculter at around 5.30pm, before returning briefly to Aberdeen Airport. Then, from 8pm, they’ll soar past Balfield (Angus), Leuchars (Fife), and North Berwick (East Lothian) on their journey back to England. Exact timings may vary, so keep your eyes on the horizon. It’s a rare chance to catch them beyond the display zone.
