Small Isles, Isle of Eigg

St Donnan’s Roman Catholic Church

Add to List

Overview

St Donnan’s stands beside a narrow access road in Cleadale, built on the footprint of an earlier chapel. Around its rectangular nave is a gabled chancel and small vestry. Inside, simple wooden pews face an altar framed by a distinctive cinquefoil window. The slate roof and stone buttresses give it modest architectural presence, while the bellcote and cross above the entrance rise quietly above the grass.

The church is named after St Donnan of Eigg, a monk believed to have established a monastery here in the early 7th century before being murdered along with his companions. The current building commemorates that tradition and serves the island’s small Roman Catholic community. Mass and services are held by visiting priests, often supported by residents with long-standing ties to Eigg.

The interior is unadorned and functional—wooden floors, pale walls, and soft light from tall windows. A few icons, candles, and communal seating give warmth to its quiet simplicity. The building remains listed for its historical and community interest.
