Small Isles, Isle of Eigg

Isle of Eigg Brewery

Add to List

Overview

The brewery opened in 2022, following a successful community fundraising effort that allowed locals and supporters to share ownership. Run from a small industrial unit near the village, it runs on solar and Eigg’s own grid. Brewing days coincide with ferry schedules—beers are mashed in the morning, fermenting by afternoon, and available for tasting on-site during the afternoon brewery taps. The setup is scaled for island life: modest batch sizes, full use of local water, and closed-loop systems that reuse spent grain for compost and animal feed.

Visitors can drop in during set opening times—summer afternoons are busiest—to see the fermenters and learn about the process. Tasting takes place in a basic but comfortable tap area beside the tanks. Expect sample pours of core styles alongside rotating special batches, including fruit-infused beers and experimental wild-fermented options. Community members help manage the bar and usually hang around to chat about flavours, brewing choices, or island developments. No formal tour is offered, but staff explain each stage and welcome questions.

The emphasis is on openness and sustainable practice. Brewing relies solely on renewable energy, with solar panels and battery storage key to operations. Local hires and volunteer support underline its community roots. Bottled beer is sold in the shop and supplied in limited quantities to island cafés and seasonal events, but most visitors sample it direct and take a few cans away.

Location

The brewery is located a short walk north from Galmisdale pier, tucked behind the main road. A discrete shed and tank can be spotted near other small businesses. There’s no parking, but bikes or foot traffic make for easy access.

What's nearby

It neighbours the community café, shop, and museum at the island hub. Paths from the brewery lead to An Sgùrr, Laig Bay, and coastal routes. It sits at the heart of the island’s social and economic centre—part of the same cluster that runs Eigg’s community regeneration.
