Isle of Eigg

Cleadale

Add to List

Overview

Cleadale sits in the northwest of Eigg, close to the sea but backed by rising ground. What’s left are a few roofless crofts, some still defined by gables and doorways. The area was once home to several families, with signs of terracing and garden plots still visible in the field. Stone boundaries run in lines across the grass, marking old enclosures and paths between homes.

The bay itself is gentle and narrow, with a tidal inlet that’s calm in most weather. On low tides, shorebirds feed along the waterline, and the sea is often still enough to reflect the cliffs on the opposite coast. In summer, thrift and campion grow along the drystone walls. The setting feels open but not exposed—quiet without being bleak.

Getting here takes time. The walk from Galmisdale is over two hours if done steadily, with little signage along the way. The route crosses fields and damp stretches of moor, and the final descent to the bay can be slippery after rain. But Cleadale’s remoteness is part of its character. Unlike the main settlement or more visited beaches, there’s no movement here beyond the weather and the sheep.

Few structures have been rebuilt or repurposed, and the crofts are largely left to the elements. Still, it’s easy to picture a lived-in past: peat stacked against walls, boats pulled onto the shore, smoke rising from chimneys. Nothing remains formal—no plaques or markers—but there’s enough stone and shape to sense how the place once functioned.
