Small Isles, Isle of Eigg

Galmisdale

Add to List

Overview

Galmisdale is the main arrival point on Eigg. There’s a single pier where the CalMac ferry docks, a cluster of low buildings, and an open space where locals meet visitors off the boat. The layout is practical—everything needed for a smooth arrival or a final pause before leaving the island is within a short walk.

The café serves meals, drinks, and cakes, and also acts as a kind of unofficial hub for updates and island chat. Next door is the shop and post office, which covers essentials, snacks, and bits of outdoor gear. Bike and kayak hire from Eigg Adventures is based in a small wooden shed just above the pier, offering everything from e-bikes to family trailers.

Though small, Galmisdale carries a quiet rhythm. Ferry days bring more bustle; in between, the space returns to stillness, with just the sound of the sea and the odd gull circling overhead. There’s a seating area near the café, and the views across to Muck and the mainland are wide open on a clear day.

From Galmisdale, visitors set off along the island’s main road—heading west toward An Sgùrr, Laig Bay, or the crofting lands further inland. Some stay near the village, either in the hostel or one of several nearby guesthouses. Others continue by foot, bike, or pre-arranged lift.
