Small Isles, Isle of Eigg

An Sgùrr

Add to List

Overview

An Sgùrr dominates the skyline of Eigg. Shaped from volcanic rock that filled an ancient riverbed, it’s been left standing while the softer land around it eroded over time. The result is a narrow, rugged ridge rising to 393 metres, with steep cliffs on one side and a more gradual approach from the west.

The standard route begins near the main road from Galmisdale and follows a rough path past the old village of Grulin. From there, the trail climbs through moorland and reaches a natural saddle. The final stretch involves a short, rocky scramble up onto the summit ridge, where a trig point marks the top.

The walk is around 8 kilometres in total and can take between three and four hours depending on pace and ground conditions. The terrain is uneven underfoot, with sections that can become boggy in wet weather. Solid footwear is essential, especially near the summit where the rock is exposed and the slope falls away sharply.

From the top, views extend in all directions—across to Rum, Muck, and Skye, back down the length of Eigg, and out to the mainland hills. The climb offers a sense of perspective over the island’s unique shape and setting. On a clear day, it’s one of the best natural viewpoints in the Inner Hebrides.

An Sgùrr can be walked independently by those with moderate experience, but it’s also commonly included in guided outings or day itineraries from the ferry landing.

Location

The walk starts from near Galmisdale, Eigg’s ferry terminal. Follow the main road west before branching off near the base of the hill. The route to the summit is unmarked but well-worn. Allow extra time in wet weather and take care on the final rocky section.

What's nearby

The ruins of Grulin lie below the climb, offering views back toward Canna and Rum. Nearby trails lead to the community hub at Galmisdale, and northward toward Laig Bay and the Singing Sands. On clear days, the summit ridge connects you visually to nearly every corner of the Small Isles.
