Ardnamurchan Lighthouse on its dark rocks above a grey sea.
Ardnamurchan

Ardnamurchan Point

The lighthouse at the westernmost end of the Ardnamurchan road, built in 1849, with a visitor centre, a cafe and a climb to the top.

Welcome

At the very end of the long road west across Ardnamurchan, past a gateway with its own traffic lights, a grey granite lighthouse stands on a rocky point above the Atlantic.

It was built in 1849 by Alan Stevenson and rises 36 metres, its lantern 55 metres above the sea.

The old stable block is now the visitor centre, with a cafe, a shop and exhibitions on lighthouses, the rocks of the peninsula and its wildlife, and the old engine room can be seen too. The real reward is the climb: 152 steps and two ladders to the balcony, where Rum and Skye rise to the north and on a clear day Barra shows fifty miles away.

The centre opens from Tuesday to Sunday. The true westernmost point of mainland Britain is a rocky outcrop a short way to the south.
