On Saturday the 23rd of August 2025, Dumfries hosts Nithraid, a day-long celebration of the River Nith and its historical ties to local trade. The event centres on a unique tide-dependent boat race—rowed, sailed or kayaked—from Glencaple slipway to Mill Green in the town. Each vessel carries a symbolic cargo recalling past maritime commerce. Earlier in the day the Salty Coo procession winds through town, bringing communities together in costume and flags. Mill Green becomes a creative hub with free environmental workshops, boat-building demonstrations, photography projects and interactive installations led by local artists. The festival combines competition, community and riverside culture.
