Thomas Carlyle's Birthplace

The small house in Ecclefechan where the writer Thomas Carlyle was born in 1795, built by his father and uncle and open since 1881.

On the High Street of the village of Ecclefechan, near Lockerbie, stands the Arched House, a modest white house with a big story.

Thomas Carlyle, one of the most influential writers and thinkers of Victorian Britain, was born here in 1795.

The house was built by his father and uncle, both stonemasons, and it is a fine example of eighteenth-century Scottish village building. It has been open to visitors since 1881 and has barely changed since. Inside you can see Carlyle's cradle, his writing desk and a bookcase of his books, and a tribute for his eightieth birthday signed by many famous Victorians. At thirteen he walked eighty-four miles to Edinburgh to go to university.

Carlyle is buried beside his parents in the village churchyard nearby. The house is cared for by the National Trust for Scotland.
