Dumfries and Galloway
Thomas Carlyle’s Birthplace
Introduction
Restored by the National Trust for Scotland, this unassuming cottage in Ecclefechan is actually the childhood home of one of Britain’s most famous Victorian thinkers. First opened to the public in 1881, you can see preserved artefacts from Carlyle’s childhood and learn more about the early years of this Scottish intellectual.
