Deep in Mabie Forest, three and a half miles from Dumfries, Mabie House is a seventeenth-century country house turned hotel, set among tall trees and lawns.

The forest around it is laced with walking paths and the celebrated 7stanes mountain bike trails, so the hotel is popular with riders and walkers as well as those looking for a quiet stay. The restaurant serves seasonal three-course dinners made with local produce, and afternoon tea, and the bar offers simpler pub food. Guests have praised the cooking, the staff and the grounds.

The hotel is open all year, with rooms that include a bridal suite, and it hosts weddings and events in its Garden Pavilion. It makes a peaceful base for exploring Dumfries and the Solway coast.
