Cabins and bothies in Scotland with a hot tub of their own, from a larch A-frame among Highland cows to tiny lodges beside a river in Glencoe.

There’s nothing like sinking into a hot tub outdoors, with trees all round you and a cold night coming on, and a cabin is the place to do it. These are the cabins and bothies we know in Scotland that have a hot tub of their own. Most of the tubs are fired with wood, so lighting it becomes part of the day.

They range from a larch A-frame in a field of Highland cows to a row of tiny lodges beside a river in Glencoe. Most are for two.

Woodshed

01 · Pentland Hills, near Edinburgh · Sleeps 2

Woodshed

The Woodshed is a cabin of silvered timber at the end of a winding farm track in the Pentlands, hidden in heather hills. Roxburgh McEwan Architects designed it, and it’s simple and Nordic inside, with pale wood, a wood-burning stove fed with logs grown on the farm and a bedroom tucked under the roof.

The wood-fired hot tub is outside and private. It’s quiet enough here to hear the cuckoo and see the hares. It sleeps two and isn’t suitable for children.

Wilderkin Cabin

02 · Scottish Borders, 25 minutes from Edinburgh · Sleeps 2

Wilderkin Cabin

Wilderkin is off-grid and has a glade to itself, down a grass path among wild apple and cherry trees. The cabin is built of local larch, Douglas fir and hemlock, and its big window looks across gorse and heather to the Pentland Hills.

Inside there’s a king-size bed, a woodburner, a record player, books and games, and no wifi at all. Outside you can cook on the fire pit and soak in a Japanese ofuro tub while the owls and curlews get on with their evening.

Midpark

Midpark is a larch A-frame in the fenced corner of a field that often has Highland cows in it. It’s light and simple inside, with a Scandinavian wood-burning stove and a wall of glass that looks out to big skies, and the king-size bed is up on the mezzanine.

Have your coffee on the veranda looking over the valley, then light the wood-fired hot tub in time for the stars. There’s a barbecue and a pizza oven, and fresh eggs from the estate’s hens. It’s for adults only, and one small dog is welcome.

04 · Pluscarden, Moray · Sleeps 2

Callie Bothy

Callie Bothy sits on its own among larches and pines in the Pluscarden valley, between Forres and Elgin. Almost everything in it was made by hand, from the kitchen and the furniture to the pottery and the textiles, and big windows look straight into the trees.

A glass door leads from the bath and rain shower to the wood-fired hot tub. There’s a wood-burning stove, a fire pit and an outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven, and you can add a session in the woodland sauna. There’s wifi but no television.

North Lodge and River Cabin

This one comes in two parts. North Lodge is a Victorian house for six on the Glen Dye estate, done up with bold colour, old paintings and an open fire. The River Cabin is a little timber cabin at the end of a private path on the bank of the River Dye, with a wood-burning stove inside, and it’s yours for the stay as well.

There’s a private wood-fired hot tub, dogs are welcome, and the estate’s sauna, shop and pub, the Glen Dye Arms, are close by.
