Kafeneion to Steki
A Cretan taverna on Coburg Street in Leith, by the Water of Leith, with meze to share, octopus from the grill and a list of Greek wines.
There's something about a meal where everything goes in the middle of the table, and Kafeneion to Steki, a Cretan taverna on Coburg Street in Leith, is all about sharing.
The cooking follows the island's own traditions, simple and fresh, with plenty of herbs, vegetables, seafood and extra virgin olive oil. Plates of meze arrive as each one is ready: handmade bread with olive oil and oregano, Cretan artichokes, feta wrapped in filo with sesame and honey, and octopus slow-cooked in red wine and finished on the grill. On Sundays the menu changes to vegetarian small plates and big platters of grilled meats. The drinks are Greek too, from ouzo and tsipouro to a long list of Greek wines. It's open from Wednesday to Sunday, with lunch from Friday, and you can book online or simply walk in. The Royal Yacht Britannia is half a mile away, so it's an easy one to pair with a visit.
