Aberdeenshire

Fyvie Castle

Add to List

Introduction

Fyvie Castle rises in the Aberdeenshire countryside as one of Scotland’s most striking baronial homes. Built in stages from the 13th century onwards, it carries the architectural signatures of five successive families, each adding their own tower and flourishes to the structure. The result is an asymmetrical, fairytale-like façade with turrets, corbels, and an unmistakably Scottish character. Once a royal stronghold linked to William the Lion and Robert the Bruce, the castle later became a grand residence reflecting the wealth and taste of its owners, from the Prestons to the Forbes-Leiths.

Inside, visitors find an extraordinary collection of art and antiques, including works by Raeburn, Gainsborough, and Batoni. The sweeping staircase, intricate plaster ceilings, and oak-panelled rooms tell stories of aristocratic life, while ghost tales—such as the Green Lady—add an eerie undertone to its history.

The grounds are equally atmospheric, with a loch, walled garden, and woodland walks that bring a quiet contrast to the grandeur within. Managed today by the National Trust for Scotland, Fyvie offers an absorbing glimpse into the layered history of Scottish nobility, where architecture, legend, and landscape all come together in one of the country’s most evocative castles.
