On the edge of Oldmeldrum, in the rolling farmland north-west of Aberdeen, Barra Castle is a family farm with an old castle at its heart, and its farm shop and café is where most people come to know it.

The farm has long been known as Barra Berries, for the berries of its summer fields.

The café is a bright, relaxed room under a neon sign, and it serves hearty breakfasts, lunches of bagels, salads and sandwiches, generous cakes and, above all, ice cream, the farm's summer speciality.

Barra Castle itself hosts weddings and events, and there are places to stay on the farm. The berry season is summer, when a visit is at its best, and Bennachie rises on the horizon to the west.
