Isle of Skye

Days out to remember.

Skye is made for getting outdoors. You can take a boat right into the Cuillin, walk to a tidal island when the sea is low, sit quietly in a hide watching for otters, or spend a week on the long-distance trail along the island's spine. There are wild walks to remote points and cleared townships, short climbs to big views, and guided trips with people who know the island inside out. Whatever you choose, pack for every kind of weather, as it can change in minutes here.

Under the Skye Bridge at Kyleakin, the little island of Eilean Bàn was the last home of Gavin Maxwell, the naturalist who wrote Ring of Bright Water.

Maxwell lived on the island from January 1968 until his death in September 1969, and part of the lighthouse cottage is now a museum to him. The lighthouse itself was built by David Stevenson in 1857. The Eilean Bàn Trust runs the island, and its tours take in the museum, the lighthouse and the wildlife hides, with herons and seals about and, with luck, an otter in the water. Tours are booked ahead by email or phone.
