Polentoni
An Italian bakery and kitchen on Easter Road, making takeaway sandwiches, small pizzas and cakes, open from breakfast until two.
Polentoni is a small Italian bakery and kitchen on Easter Road, behind a pale blue front a few minutes from the top of Leith Walk, and it's one of the best places in the city to pick up lunch.
Everything is made here, and the sandwiches are the reason to come: Italian ham with salsa verde, or pulled brisket in a saltimbocca, on bread with a good crust. There are small pizzas too, and cheesecakes made from scratch for afterwards. The Good Food Guide's eating guide to Edinburgh names it among the city's best sandwiches. It's takeaway only, with no tables, so take your lunch up to Calton Hill or down to Holyrood Park and eat it with a view. It opens at eight in the morning from Monday to Saturday and closes at two in the afternoon, and it's closed on Sunday.

Open Monday to Saturday from 8am to 2pm, and closed on Sunday.
It is takeaway only, so bring lunch up to Calton Hill or down to Holyrood Park.
