Clarinda's Tearoom

A tearoom on the Canongate since 1976, named for Robert Burns's Clarinda, with homemade scones, lace tablecloths and china cups.

Welcome

Near the foot of the Royal Mile, on the Canongate, Clarinda's Tearoom has been serving homemade scones since 1976.

It takes its name from Clarinda, the name Robert Burns gave to Agnes Maclehose, the Edinburgh friend who inspired one of his best-loved love songs.

Step inside and the street's bustle gives way to something from another age. Lace cloths cover the round tables, the tea comes in flowered china cups, and the walls are hung from floor to ceiling with old plates, framed prints and portraits. A tall wooden sideboard at the back is laid with the day's baking under glass domes: sponges thick with cream and jam, tiffin, lemon cake and, above all, the scones. There are soups and toasted sandwiches for a light lunch as well.

The tearoom opens every day but Monday. It takes no bookings, so it is a matter of waiting at the door to be seated, and afternoon tea is kept for special events booked ahead.
