Welcome

On the Canongate, the lower half of the Royal Mile, a dark green shopfront with gold lettering is the Edinburgh shop of Cadenhead's, Scotland's oldest independent whisky bottler.

The company was founded in 1842, and it has always done things its own way, choosing single casks from distilleries across Scotland and bottling them as they are.

Inside, the shop is comfortingly old-fashioned, with wooden shelves crowded with bottles and a tartan carpet underfoot. Its great pleasure is the casks behind the counter: whisky can be tasted and bought straight from the barrel, filled into a bottle while you wait, and the staff are glad to talk through what is on the shelves. There are rums and gins from the same hand as well.

Cadenhead's opens every day from half past ten, a few minutes' walk from the Tolbooth.
