On St Mary's Street, a few steps down from the Royal Mile where the High Street meets the Canongate, a shop with its name in gold above two windows full of wool and tweed sells only textiles made in Scotland.

That sets it apart from the tartan souvenir shops of the Royal Mile: here every piece is made by Scottish mills and makers.

Inside, the shelves hold throws and blankets in checks and soft colours, scarves and wraps, Harris Tweed coats for women, and skeins of knitting wool, all in natural fibres such as wool, cashmere, alpaca and linen. The staff know the makers and share their stories, so each blanket or scarf comes with a sense of the island or glen it was made in.

The Scottish Textiles Showcase opens every day, five minutes' walk from Waverley station.
