Montrose
A restaurant and wine bar in Abbeyhill, in a 19th-century building first built as an inn, with a menu that changes every week, natural wines and a set lunch from Friday to Sunday.
Montrose is a neighbourhood restaurant and wine bar in Abbeyhill, in a late 19th-century building that was first built as an inn, and it's the sister of Timberyard.
The cooking starts with the ingredients, from local and artisan suppliers, farmers and foragers, and the menu changes every week. In autumn that might mean partridge with quince, day boat squid with horseradish, or cavatelli with girolles, with oysters, curried eggs and focaccia to start. There's a seasonal tasting menu shaped by what the kitchen has on the day, and vegetarian and vegan menus too. The wine list is long, with natural and biodynamic wines from small European growers. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays a set lunch of three courses costs £25, a lovely way to get to know it. It's open from Thursday evening to Sunday, and booking is advised, though there's room for walk-ins. The Michelin Guide lists it, and the Palace of Holyroodhouse is a short walk away.

Open Thursday evening to Sunday, and on Wednesday evenings in July and August.
Booking is advised, and there is walk-in space.
