Cafés in Scotland.

and the bakeries worth the queue

The Mains of Drum, Aberdeenshire

In short

Cafes, most of them in the cities, and the rest spread thinly enough that finding one is part of the day out. Dunvegan Bakery on Skye is said to be the oldest on the island, going back to around 1870, and still does apple turnovers and iced slices until they sell out and shut. Skye has a fair amount of coffee for an island its size. Further out again there is Kilbride Cafe on South Uist, the Stables Coffee Shop at Kilchoan, the Port Pantry in Stranraer and the Gordon's Tearoom in Braemar. Most of them are small enough to walk straight past.

A family-run ice cream, dessert and sweetie shop on Stonehaven's beachfront, known for its quirky style, loaded toppings and ice cream made with local produce. From our write-up of Aunty Bettys
