On Dundas Street, which runs down the hill of the northern New Town, a handsome Georgian front with a gilded sign and flowers at its railings is the Scottish Gallery, one of the oldest galleries in the country.

It was founded in 1842 by Aitken Dott, and for well over a century and a half it has championed the work of Scottish artists and makers.

The gallery shows and sells work by leading artists of today alongside the great names of the past: paintings, from quiet seascapes to blazing landscapes, as well as ceramics, glass, metalwork and jewellery, the applied arts it has long been known for. Exhibitions change through the year and fill two floors, and in fair weather the garden at the back is open too.

The Scottish Gallery opens from Tuesday to Saturday, and entry is free.
