Small Isles, Isle of Canna

St Edward’s Church

Add to List

Overview

St Edward’s stands a short distance from Canna’s main settlement, on the tidal island of Sanday, just across a low bridge from Canna. Built in the late 1800s, its wedge-shaped nave and small bellcote give it modest character. Inside, pale walls, wooden pews, and stained-glass windows create a calm, welcoming space. The altar, topped with a carved wooden cross, feels held in place more by steady hands than by ceremony.

The building was added to meet the needs of crofting families and visiting fishermen, offering a regular place of worship in an otherwise sparse religious landscape. Though services are limited—usually seasonal—its simple architecture suggests both permanence and humility. It hasn’t been modernised with flashy additions; nothing distracts from the silence and clarity of the interior.

The church is maintained by island volunteers, who ensure the paint is fresh, windows are clean, and the roof stays sound against Atlantic weather. Candles and hymn books wait by the pews for visitors or worshippers, though no staff are present. It isn’t locked, but it’s treated like something precious—soft steps and respectful distance seem most appropriate.

St Edward’s also hosts occasional community events: summer services, weddings, and small musical evenings when conditions allow. Around Christmas and Easter, families return, and the building takes on a more active role. Otherwise, the congregation is occasional, but the church remains quietly central to island identity.

Location

St Edward’s Church sits near the centre of Sanday, reached across a short tidal bridge from Canna. It stands at the eastern end, overlooking the gently sloping bay and visible from the coastal path. Access is simple on foot, with no tracked path but clear sightlines guiding the way.

What's nearby

Just downhill lies Traigh Bhàn, the sandy beach known as Singing Sands. A few ruined cottages hint at former crofting life. From the church, paths lead north along the coast or back over the bridge to Canna’s harbour area, café, shop, and community hub. Stone-walled plots and grazing sheep lie scattered nearby.
