The Star Rock Shop

Said to be Scotland's oldest sweet shop, founded in Kirriemuir in 1833, still making its own Star Rock to a recipe passed down for nearly two centuries.

In a red sandstone lane in the middle of Kirriemuir, the Star Rock Shop has been selling sweets since 1833, and it is said to be the oldest sweet shop in Scotland.

David Ferguson founded it, and his recipe for Star Rock, the sweet that gave the shop its name, stayed in the Ferguson family for more than 140 years before being handed on, unchanged, to the owners who followed.

Inside, the original wooden shelves still bow under rows of sweetie jars, full of Scottish favourites and classic British sweets, and horehound humbugs are still made by hand in the shop.

Its most famous customer grew up just round the corner. J. M. Barrie, the author of Peter Pan, came here as a boy and loved Star Rock so much that he had it sent to him in London. In 1919, Queen Mary was given Star Rock while staying at Airlie Castle. The shop opens from Tuesday to Saturday.
