Kirriemuir

The Wee Red Toon of Angus, built of red sandstone, the birthplace of J.M. Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan, and a gateway to the Angus glens.

Welcome

Kirriemuir is known as the Wee Red Toon, for the warm red sandstone of its buildings, and it is a small, hilly market town full of character at the foot of the Angus glens.

Its most famous son is J.M. Barrie, who was born here in a little weaver's cottage on Brechin Road and went on to write Peter Pan. The cottage is now a museum run by the National Trust for Scotland, and a bronze statue of Peter Pan stands in the town centre. Kirriemuir also claims another famous boy: Bon Scott, the singer of AC/DC, spent his early childhood here, and he has a statue of his own.

The Town House holds the Gateway to the Glens Museum, with carved stones, and from here the roads run north into the Angus glens.
