The university campus on the Airthrey estate below the Ochils, with a loch, woodland walks and a Robert Adam castle.
The University of Stirling stands on the old Airthrey estate below the Ochil Hills, just outside Bridge of Allan.
Its green spaces are open to everyone and free, and they make a fine place for a walk even if you have no business with the university.
At the centre is Airthrey Loch, made in the late 1700s as part of the castle's landscape, with a path of about 2.3 kilometres around its shore, where swans and ducks drift past and cygnets follow in spring. Above the loch stands Airthrey Castle, built in 1791 to designs by Robert Adam, and behind it the Hermitage Woods climb the hillside, with a bridle path through the trees. Several marked trails loop around the campus, the longest about five kilometres, with views of the Wallace Monument and Dumyat.
