Outlander Filming Locations You Can Visit

Outlander was filmed all over Scotland, and most of the castles, mills and cathedrals it used are open to visit. From Fort William's stand-in to the standing stones that started it all, these are the locations you can see for yourself.

Curated and written by Hidden Scotland

Updated 22 September 2026.

Outlander was filmed almost entirely in Scotland, and most of what it used was worth seeing long before the cameras arrived. Castles standing in for other castles, a cathedral playing a French hospital, a working mill from the eighteenth century, and the standing stones that started the whole story.

We've gathered our favourite Outlander locations you can visit, from grand fortresses to quiet corners you'd walk past without knowing. Most are open to visitors, and several are free.
