St Salvator’s Chapel
Welcome
Look for St Salvator’s Chapel and the initials PH set into the cobblestones outside.
They stand for Patrick Hamilton, an early preacher who was burned at the stake here in St Andrews. The fire was badly prepared: the wood was freshly cut and smouldered slowly, and his death was long. His face is said to be etched into the stone of St Salvator’s, and it is said to be bad luck to tread on his initials.
