Its black sign carries a little bear, and it stocks the best of what Scotland has on its doorstep: much of what is on the shelves is locally sourced and sustainably made by Scottish small businesses.

There is good coffee at the counter, and the shelves are lined with speciality wines and spirits, craft beers, artisan cheese, fresh bread and bakes, and a steady range of pantry goods, alongside local, sustainable beauty products, homeware, books and art. Because the shop is small, everything on the shelves has to earn its place, and the owners choose and check all of it themselves. Adam and Rebecca work closely with their suppliers, and community is everything to them, from charity giving to regular evening tastings and daytime drop-ins where you can meet the makers. No.40 opens Wednesday to Saturday from half past eight until four.
