Duthil Old Parish Church and Churchyard
The old parish church of Duthil near Carrbridge, rebuilt in 1826 and now the Clan Grant Centre, with Clan Grant memorials in its churchyard.
Duthil Old Parish Church stands in its walled churchyard in the parish of Duthil, just east of Carrbridge, and it is the spiritual home of Clan Grant.
A church is thought to have stood here, dedicated to St Peter, since around 1400, and some accounts put its founding much earlier. It belonged first to the diocese of Elgin, and it has been rebuilt more than once: in 1826 the pre-Reformation building was taken down and the present church put up in the same year, and it was renovated again just before the First World War.
The church closed for worship in 1967, and its pulpit, communion table and memorial plaques went to the church in Carrbridge. It is now the Clan Grant Centre, home to the Clan Grant Society, which holds its AGM here each August on the Friday before the Abernethy Highland Games. The churchyard is full of Grant memorials, and in it stands a grand stone mausoleum with battlements over its doorway.
