Duthil Old Parish Church and Churchyard

Add to List

Introduction

Originally believed to have been built in around 1400 in honour of St Peter – although some reports suggest it was founded around 1060 by Patriarch Olav Hemingsson - Duthil Old Parish Church and Churchyard is an historic site in the parish of Duthil, near Carrbridge. Initially in the diocese of Elgin Cathedral, the church has been rebuilt on several occasions, including in 1826 when records show the pre-Reformation building was taken down and a new edifice constructed in the same year. Just before World War I, Duthil Old Parish Church was renovated again, before closing to services in 1967.

Some key artefacts from the church were relocated to Carrbridge United Free Church, including the pulpit, communion table and chair, alongside a number of memorial plaques which can still be seen today. Meanwhile, the churchyard contains numerous memorials to the Clan Grant – a Highlands Scottish clan. In fact, the Old Parish Church itself is now home to the Clan Grant Society.
