Welcome

In a wooded dell on the Barry Burn, two miles west of Carnoustie, a tall mill of pink stone stands beside its lade, and when the sluice opens the great wheel turns and the whole building begins to rumble.

There have been mills here since at least 1539, when the monks of Balmerino Abbey owned them.

The mill that stands today was built in 1814, after its predecessor burned down, and it ground oatmeal for local farms until 1982. The National Trust for Scotland took it on and restored it to its working state of 1814, and it is now one of only a handful of water mills still turning in Scotland. Inside, wooden hoppers, shafts and millstones fill the floors, and on milling days the air turns white with dust.

Woodland paths run along the burn. The mill opens in season from Thursday to Sunday, with milling tours on Fridays.
