Glen Tilt – The River Glen above Blair Atholl
About 5.3 miles on foot.

Glen Tilt runs north from Blair Atholl deep into the hills, a long, straight river glen and one of Scotland's great old rights of way.
From the estate car park a track follows the rushing Tilt through the woods and out into the open glen to Gilbert's Bridge, under the slopes of Beinn a' Ghlo. It's a fine half day, with lunch at the Blair Atholl Watermill when you're back.
- Time
- About three hours: about 8.5 km there and back on the glen track from the Glen Tilt car park to Gilbert's Bridge. A walk on a wide track.
- The path
- A wide estate track up the glen; the River Tilt circuit has steps and steep drops.
- Where to start
- Atholl Estates' Glen Tilt car park on the edge of Blair Atholl; no overnight parking.
- Set off
- From November to February, set off by noon to be back in daylight.
- When to go
- All year in daylight. The track through the rifle range shuts on long-range shooting days (9, 10 and 11 October in 2026). Stags are stalked until 20 October, never on a Sunday. The Watermill's tearoom opens from 1 April to 31 October.
- Dogs
- Welcome under control (Atholl Estates); sheep and ground-nesting birds in the glen.
- Children
- The glen track is wide and easy; the River Tilt circuit has steep drops to the river.
- Toilets
- In Blair Atholl; none in the glen.
- Before you set out
- The track through the Jubilee Rifle Range shuts on long-range shooting days: 9, 10 and 11 October in 2026, and the estate posts the next year's dates on its walking page. Stags are stalked from 1 August to 20 October, never on a Sunday: keep to the main routes, or ring the Hillphone, 01796 481740, updated at 8am.
The walk
The walk starts at Atholl Estates' Glen Tilt car park on the edge of Blair Atholl, where there's a map board of the estate's walks and overnight parking isn't allowed. A wide track runs up the glen beside the River Tilt, through woods at first and then into the open glen, to Gilbert's Bridge: about 8.5 km there and back measured on the map, so allow about three hours. The estate's own waymarked Glen Tilt Trail goes further, 10 miles in all.
In 1847 a party of Edinburgh botany students clashed here with the Duke of Atholl and his men, and the long fight in the courts that followed confirmed the glen as a right of way. Routes in the glen pass through the estate's Jubilee Rifle Range, which is closed to walkers on long-range shooting days; in 2026 the last are 9, 10 and 11 October. Atholl Estates stalks stags until 20 October, never on a Sunday, and asks walkers to keep to the main routes; its Hillphone, 01796 481740, is updated at 8am.
Dogs are welcome under control. For a short walk, the national park's River Tilt circuit is 2.5 km, about an hour, through the woods by the river, with steep drops and a flight of steps.
If it rains
The track is easy in rain and the river is loud after it, but the open glen is bare: on a wet day keep to the River Tilt circuit in the woods.
Afterwards

Blair Atholl Watermill
Lunch
Lunch is back in the village at the Blair Atholl Watermill, a working mill of the 1590s, a few minutes' drive from the car park. Its tearoom serves homemade soup, light lunches and baking made with the mill's own flour, from 9.30am to 3.30pm every day between 1 April and 31 October, so be back by three. It shuts from November to March, when you'll want a piece, a packed lunch, in your bag. Dogs are welcome.
