Brunch at the Pantry – Stockbridge and Circus Lane

A few hours, from Waverley Station and back.

The route

The Pantry is a bright little corner café in Stockbridge, the village-like part of Edinburgh just north of the New Town, and its brunches draw a queue on a Sunday morning.

Round the corner is Circus Lane, a cobbled mews of stone cottages and climbing plants that's one of the prettiest streets in the city.

The day

Stockbridge

A slow start in Stockbridge: a long, lazy brunch, then a few minutes on the cobbles of one of the New Town's loveliest lanes before the walk back up the hill.

About two and a half hours

    Breakfast

It's a 24-minute walk from Waverley, downhill through the New Town, to the Pantry on North West Circus Place. It opens every day at 9am and takes no bookings, and on a Sunday there's often a queue, so be there before 10am. Brunch is served until 3pm, with plates such as poached eggs with burrata and roast tomatoes, pork belly with a poached egg, or avocado on toast.

  2. 24 min on foot

    Circus Lane

    Circus Lane

    An attraction

Circus Lane is a short walk round the corner from the Pantry, a curving cobbled mews built for the carriages and horses of the grand houses on Royal Circus. Ivy and climbing plants cover the stone cottages, and the clock tower of the old St Stephen's Church, now a theatre, closes the view at the far end. The cottages are homes, so go quietly. The walk back to Waverley is 24 minutes, uphill all the way.

If it rains

In the rain, linger over brunch and keep the lane to a quick look: the cobbles get slippery, so take them slowly.
