On Raeburn Place, the main street of Stockbridge, a deep green shopfront with arched panels of stained glass in its windows carries two signs: Cafe and Bar on one side and Cowan & Sons on the other.

It is a neighbourhood cafe and a print shop at once, a place where food, drink and art come together.

On the walls hang limited-edition prints, for sale to anyone who falls for one over breakfast. The kitchen serves the day's food from morning to afternoon, with good coffee, hot chocolate and cakes, and there is a hatch at the front where people queue on the pavement for a coffee to take along the Water of Leith.

Cowan & Sons opens every day from nine until five. It takes no bookings, and on a Sunday it makes a fine stop before or after the market in Saunders Street, a few minutes' walk away.
