Dinner worth the drive.

Eating out in Perthshire can be a real treat. There are country house hotels and grand Victorian buildings serving dinner in elegant dining rooms, a restaurant with rooms beside a remote Highland station, and an old inn with its own brewery. In the towns you'll find family-run bistros and cafés serving good home cooking all day. Many cook with beef, lamb, game and soft fruit from the farms around them. Book ahead, especially for dinner at the weekend.

Matilda Ruffle, the sommelier who runs Killiecrankie House in Perthshire with her chef husband Tom Tsappis, believes dinner is better when guests stay the night.

Their restaurant with rooms stands above the Pass of Killiecrankie. Staying over means that instead of arriving, eating and rushing off into the night, guests have time to explore the area, visit a distillery, stroll round the kitchen garden or join a whisky tasting at the bar. Each of these, she says, helps set the scene for the meal to come. As she puts it, 'It means that you are not just going out for dinner, you are heading somewhere and immersing yourself in it'. Tom cooks a tasting menu full of home-grown and locally sourced produce, and Matilda pairs it with drinks that run from wine to sake and cocktails.

Fraser Potter rebuilt The Taybank in Dunkeld, a pub once owned by Dougie MacLean, who wrote the folk tune 'Caledonia', while training to row the Atlantic.

Fraser did it during the pandemic, almost single-handedly, while training with four friends to row for charity. He turned the pub's car park into one of the biggest beer gardens in Scotland, with circus-style awnings sloping down to the River Tay. Upstairs he converted the five rooms himself, doing all the joinery. He kept the old-school bar with its stacks of instruments for live music sessions, and most of the herbs and veg for the first-floor restaurant are grown in the walled garden he restored. Beside the river there are now long-table supper clubs, an outdoor sauna he built, and outdoor film screenings in summer.
