Perthshire takes its tearooms seriously. There are traditional tea rooms in Perth and Pitlochry serving proper loose-leaf tea, and a café in a restored oatmeal mill full of books. There's even a tearoom on the platform of a remote Highland station, at the end of a long road across the moor. Add speciality coffee roasters, a chocolatier and family-run bakeries, and you'll never be far from somewhere good to stop. Many make everything themselves, so arrive early for the best of the baking.

Tickled Trout Café.

Despite opening in the middle of a pandemic, the refurbished Tickled Trout Café has earned a reputation for offering quality homemade fare in a building with oodles of character. It’s based in an old mill at a trout farm – a water-channel actually runs right through the building – and the homemade smoked trout pate is a signature item.

Blair Atholl Watermill, in Highland Perthshire, is the country's oldest watermill, and it is fully working again after falling silent in the 1920s.

The mill dates back to the late 16th century. It fell out of use in the 1920s and stood idle for decades, until restoration began in the 1970s. Today this handsome old mill is still fully functioning, stone-grinding oatmeal and flour in the traditional manner for its own tearooms. It sits in the village of Blair Atholl, on the edge of the wide forested estate of Blair Castle, a whitewashed colossus whose visitors once included Mary Queen of Scots and Bonnie Prince Charlie.

The Tea Garden at Comrie Croft.

Comrie Croft is a 200-year-old farmstead reinvented as a kind of modern day eco-retreat, complete with camping, a farm shop and a seasonal tea garden that sources much of its produce from neighbouring Tomnah’a Market Garden. Come for cakes, pies, salads, soups and other goodies.

Flora Shedden was the youngest semi-finalist of the BBC's Great British Bake Off in 2015, and went on to open her bakery in Dunkeld, in Highland Perthshire. She named it Aran, the Scottish Gaelic word for bread or a loaf.

It makes a good stop on any tour of the county, because Perthshire does its food and drink like it does its scenery, with plenty of variety and in large amounts.

Born in 2021 and based at the Cairn O’Mohr winery, The Pickled Peacock is run by two sisters – Linsay and Holly Duncan – who oversee a quirky café that uses local produce, holds wine tastings, and generally turns a light bite or coffee into an unfettered joy. A special shout-out to the haggis, cheese and chilli jam toastie.
