Where to go on Skye.

Skye is one of those places that stops you in your tracks, again and again. There are the jagged peaks of the Cuillin, the pinnacles and landslips of the Trotternish ridge, and sea cliffs where the waves crash far below. Between them you'll find castles of the old clans, crofting townships, waterfalls tumbling to the sea and beaches of black and white sand. It's a big island, so give yourself time, pick a corner each day and leave room for the detours. These are the places on Skye we think are most worth seeing.

Old Man of Storr.

The subject of a million and one Instagram posts, the ‘Old Man’ is a spearing pinnacle of rock on the rugged Trotternish ridgeline. The walk up to reach it is one of the most popular on the island, but the views from the top are unbeatable.

White-tailed eagles, the UK's largest birds of prey, died out in Scotland in 1918 and returned from 1975, starting on the Isle of Rum.

Their huge size and broad, almost rectangular wings have earned them the nickname of the flying barn door. The first birds were released on Rum in a project led by the RSPB and Scottish Natural Heritage, and more releases followed over the years. Today they live along the west coast of Scotland and on the islands, where they catch fish and also take rabbits, hares and birds such as gulls and ducks. On Mull and Skye, boat trips from Tobermory and Portree go out to look for them.

Gaelic papers held at the Skye and Lochalsh Archive Centre are to be catalogued and opened up.

Two new archive officers, one on Skye and one on Lewis, will work through collections including the papers of the crofters' champion Rev. Donald MacCallum and the records of Gaelic theatre companies Fir Chlis and Tosg. Exhibitions and workshops are promised as the work goes on.

Talisker distillery is paying to bring native oysters and seagrass back to Loch Harport, the sea loch outside its door.

Over three years Talisker is putting £600,000 into native oyster and seagrass projects in two west-coast lochs, Loch Harport on Skye and Loch Craignish in Argyll, run by the community charity Seawilding. The need is plain: since industrialisation began, the UK has lost 92 per cent of its seagrass.
