Dundee
Jute, comics and Captain Scott's ship.
Dundee is a city on the river, and much of what's worth seeing sits along the Tay. On the waterfront, Scotland's design museum leans out over the water beside the ship that carried Captain Scott to Antarctica in 1901. In town there's a Gothic museum built as a memorial to Prince Albert, a jute mill of 1833 with its machines still working, and bronze characters from the Beano and the Dandy on the High Street. East along the shore, Broughty Ferry has its castle and a long sandy beach. Several of the museums are free, and the city sights are close enough to walk between.
