Dragonfly, Edinburgh

In short

Bars, a good few of them on Skye and in Edinburgh. The Stein Inn is the oldest pub on Skye, back to 1790, with the fire and the wood panelling to go with it, and Seamus' Bar at Sligachan keeps over four hundred whiskies for the walkers coming off the Cuillin. In Edinburgh, Dragonfly on an Old Town back street is where the city's cocktail revival is said to have started, Lady Libertine does much the same from a basement, and the Canny Man's was once known for a landlord who turned people away on sight. Further out, the Ballygrant Inn sits three miles north of Port Askaig on Islay, the Fiddichside Inn is at Craigellachie, and the Keel Row at Fionnphort looks straight across the water at Iona. Most are the sort of place you end up in rather than set out for.

A café bar and a cocktail bar and restaurant over two floors of the Edinburgh Grand, the old bank on St Andrew Square, with a private room in the bank vault. From our write-up of Lady Libertine
